As you all know I am a soldier in the U.S. Army Reserve. Being in the system we are always told that we are soldiers 24/7 – 365 days out of the year. I guess that makes me qualified to write a review about a movie called Forgotten Heroes, directed by Jack Marino.
Forgotten Heroes is a story about two G.I.’s who meet again years after the Vietnam War. They sit down to talk and share stories. They remembered it all as if it was yesterday. Heartfelt stories from both Marines showed a different depiction of the war. This is not your typical war movie based on stories from liberal Hollywood. This is the type of movie that teachers should be showing their high school students. This is the type of movie that professors should show to college students. Finally, this is a movie that any Vietnam veteran would agree with. The war wasn’t necessarily about baby killing, doing drugs, or hearing about your wife cheating on you while you are at war. But, according to mainstream Hollywood it was, with movies such as Platoon and Full Metal Jacket.
One director, Jack Marino, who took a different approach in creating a heart warming story about the war was black listed from main stream Hollywood. But why? For showing a different side of the story? Just recently, a movie called Brothers made it to the big screen. Another story dumping on troops coming home from the war in Afghanistan. What is wrong with that movie? Well, they make the soldier returning home look like a crazed lunatic who suffers from PTSD. Why can’t Hollywood show a softer side of how troops coming home suffer war wounds not only on the outside, but on the inside that they carry with them throughout their entire life?
