Some people will go to extremes to protect their identity. As for me, I don’t roll solo when I make public appearances and I haven’t told you my real name. I think that’s safe enough.
MORIOKA — Masked professional wrestler The Great Sasuke has won the Iwate Prefectural Assembly seat he was seeking, snaring more votes than any other candidate.
The Great Sasuke announced that he would continue to wear his mask during prefectural assembly meetings to prevent revealing his true identity.
The 33-year-old wrestler who heads the Michinoku Proresu troupe that performs in regional areas across Japan said in the wake of his Sunday electoral victory that he will champion the cause of others in his battles out of the ring.
“I want to do my best to combat medical problems and eradicate child abuse,” The Great Sasuke, who was endorsed by the Liberal Party, said from a makeshift wrestling ring set up in his campaign headquarters. “I also want to work in the assembly while masked.”
The Great Sasuke run in the Morioka electoral district where 12 candidates fought it out for 10 places in the assembly.
The Great Sasuke received more votes than any other candidate. He campaigned while masked and his face remained covered on the photo used on his campaign posters. (Mainichi Shimbun, April 14, 2003
